4 questions for our Head of Sustainability

Sustainability is a continuous journey, built on steady progress and practical action. In 2025, Emballator continued to reduce its climate footprint while strengthening internal standards and supporting customers in meeting new regulatory requirements. We spoke with our Head of Sustainability, Maria Edqvist Schultz, about the progress so far, key learnings and the focus areas that will shape the year ahead.

How much progress have we made?

In 2025, we reduced our total climate footprint per revenue by 27% compared to 2021. This progress does not come from one single area, but from smaller reductions in several different areas.

What are you most proud of?

The implementation of Emballator’s own code of conduct. Until last year, we used the code of conduct of our owner company Herenco, but now we have created our own, which is more specific to our type of business. We have also introduced a new training programme in all our local languages, including both theory and workshops.

What are the biggest challenges with the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)?

On 12 August this year, brand owners need to meet the obligations for manufacturers set out in Article 15. We support our customers in this, both with the required documentation and with our expertise in this area. A major challenge is working towards a moving target, as many of the PPWR articles are not yet fully finalised.

Could you mention some key focus areas for 2026?

In 2026, we will focus on reducing our tinplate scrap with our new cutting line. We will also focus on increasing the share of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics, especially by adding 35% PCR in our paint pail lids. To comply with the recyclability requirements in RecyClass, we will continue our work to roll out plastic pails with our new plastic handle.
