Emballator switches from PP to PE to reduce packaging fees and improve sustainability

We are introducing an important change to our cap materials that brings practical benefits for both customers and the environment. Several of our caps will shift from PP (polypropylene) to PE (polyethylene), supporting more efficient recycling, lower packaging fees and improved product performance.

Lower fees through mono material design

New Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR) and Sweden’s packaging fees (NPA) make mono material packaging more cost efficient. As many bottles and jugs are already made of PE, using PE caps helps create a full PE solution. This leads to better classification and reduced fees compared to caps made of PP paired with PE packaging.

For our customers, this means a straightforward way to cut costs and meet regulatory expectations - without changing their product.

Supporting long term sustainability goals

We aim for 100% recyclable packaging by 2025 and to reduce the use of virgin fossil-based plastics by 2030. Switching to PE supports both goals. PE works better within existing recycling streams, helps lower CO₂ emissions and strengthens our commitment to more responsible material choices.

Better cap performance

The transition to PE is not only about sustainability. It allows us to refine our cap design and reduce issues such as broken hinges or difficulties in closing. Customers will see more reliable function and improved durability in day to day use.

Implementation timeline for 2025

  • Q1–Q2: Transition begins, with rebuilding of existing tools.
  • Q2–Q3: Initial production using an older tool for customer testing.
  • Q3–Q4: Full-scale production with a new tool. The old tool remains available as backup to ensure smooth continuity.

Switching from PP to PE is a practical and forward looking decision that strengthens our material efficiency, reduces costs for our customers and improves the performance of our caps. It is one more step in our long-term effort to provide reliable packaging solutions that support a more sustainable future.
