Insights from Plastbubbel – discussions shaping the future of sustainable plastics
Representatives from Emballator recently attended Plastbubbel, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s annual conference on sustainable plastic use. Our Innovation Manager, Mats Jeppsson, was one of three colleagues taking part and brought back several valuable insights.
Plastbubbel is a forum for open discussion on sustainability and resource efficiency in plastics. The conversations highlighted many of the challenges that our industry must navigate in the coming years.
Throughout the day, speakers returned to a number of key questions, sparking thoughtful and important dialogue:
- Why is it difficult to break long‑standing habits and mindsets?
- Why do we, despite knowing the environmental impact, still hesitate to change?
- How can we improve reuse and reduce the need for new materials?
A need for systemic change
One of the clearest takeaways was that meaningful progress requires system‑level changes. Technology plays a crucial role, but sustainable innovation is also about personal responsibility and everyday behaviour.
To increase reuse and improve recycling, norms and standards need to shift. Encouragingly, new sorting technologies offer strong potential to reduce plastic waste and support a more circular, “zero‑waste” approach.
Simple, circular solutions resonate with consumers
Several inspiring examples showed how customer loyalty can grow when companies invest in circular packaging and reuse systems. When solutions are simple and easy to integrate into daily life, consumers are more likely to choose – and stick with – sustainable habits.
From insight to action
The conference reinforced that closing the gap between intention and action is essential. Small, smooth and accessible solutions can make a real difference in encouraging more sustainable choices.
While the positive developments shared during the day were uplifting, they also reminded us that sustainability is a continuous journey—one that requires long‑term effort and collaboration.
We look forward to continuing our work in sustainable innovation and contributing to a more responsible future for the plastics industry and beyond.
