Transitioning to Phthalate‑Free Sealant Compounds at Emballator
At Emballator, we are committed to offering packaging solutions that are safer and more sustainable. As part of this work, we are introducing a major update to our product range: a transition to phthalate‑free lid sealant compounds.
Why we are making this change
For many years, we have used Henkel’s PVC sealant Darex COV 53 for our lids. It has delivered the performance needed — low permeability, high elasticity and strong adhesion to tinplate. However, COV 53 contains phthalates, a group of softeners that can affect the hormone system and have environmental drawbacks.
Reducing the use of these substances is an important step in offering packaging that supports long‑term health and environmental goals.
A new phthalate‑free solution — with the same performance
Together with Henkel, we have developed a new PVC sealant compound, Darex COV 73. It is completely phthalate‑free and meets the same performance requirements as COV 53.
The material has been thoroughly tested through joint chemical and physical evaluations, including tests against UN performance standards. All results confirm that the new sealant performs just as well as the previous version.
This update marks a meaningful step in our ongoing journey towards more sustainable packaging, and we are pleased to see our suppliers supporting this development.
We will share more information soon, including the timeline for phasing out COV 53 and introducing COV 73 across our range.
At Emballator, we believe that sustainable choices are essential for the future of our industry — and we are committed to providing packaging that is safe, reliable and environmentally responsible.
