Updated Nordic Swan Ecolabel criteria for paints and varnishes

The Nordic Ecolabelling organisation has updated the criteria for the Nordic Swan Ecolabel for paints and varnishes, valid until September 2028. Emballator has contributed in an advisory capacity during this process, supporting customers in choosing packaging that meets the new sustainability requirements.

In the latest version of the criteria, the rules for plastic packaging have been expanded. The entire packaging—container, lid and handle—must now be included in the assessment. At least 30% of the total plastic packaging must consist of recycled material.

For metal packaging, there are no new restrictions (with the exception of aluminium, which is not allowed). Metal is considered a sustainable choice because it can be recycled many times and often becomes part of new metal production. In addition, metal can be recovered from the ash after incineration.

At Emballator, we offer a wide range of both plastic and metal packaging solutions that help our customers meet the Nordic Swan requirements. We work closely with customers—both current and future—to identify packaging that is sustainable, functional and suitable for the product to be filled.

“Collaboration between packaging manufacturers, interest organisations and our customers is crucial for a swift transition to more sustainable packaging choices,”

– Maria Edqvist Schultz, Head of Sustainability at Emballator
